It’s no secret that companies are conspiring to rip us off in every possible way in an effort to save whatever money they can. In fact, subreddits like r/shrinkflation are dedicated to calling out the practice of companies charging the same amount for less product, and one recent viral tweet called out Trader Joe’s in particular for skimping on their serving sizes.

Attached to the tweet are three photos that show OP weighing the entire contents of a 595-gram bag of Trader Joe’s frozen BBQ teriyaki chicken. Unfortunately for Trader Joe’s — and chicken lovers everywhere — the results clearly show that there’s only 520 grams of chicken in the bag. An injustice!

Some people doubted the seriousness of this issue, with one person even accusing OP of misleading the public by failing to factor in the weight of the teriyaki sauce packets: two packets at 75 grams each, which would actually bring the total weight to 670 grams. They even followed up with a tweet detailing their conversation with someone who “works in a factory” who told them, “Companies have packaging machines set to specific weight parameters. There are acceptable variance levels as long as they are on the positive side.”

At what point are we maybe spending too much time fact-checking people’s silly little tweets?

Others suggested suing, which sounds preposterous on the surface, until you realize there was an actual class-action lawsuit against Walmart as a result of discrepancies between listed weights of certain goods and their actual weights. Considering OP’s tweet was calling out Trader Joe’s and not Walmart, and digital outposts like r/shrinkflation document how widespread this issue is, this goes way beyond Walmart, Trader Joe’s or any one store. It’s absolutely everywhere.

Hopefully the chicken still tasted good though.
